How To Make Silhouette, Charm Pendants…. Tutorial

Photobucket

Well as Promised…
Here is the Tutorial on How to make these Lovely Charms as Seen
Now Mind you this is going to be a LONG post as I don’t know how to make COLLAGE pictures so I will have to do them individually…
I Know, I know…. Who in blogging doesn’t know how to make collage pictures..???
ME!!!!

Well Let’s get started…
I have a Mason Jar Full of Vintage Brass Rings that I have collected over time and wasn’t quite sure what I was going to use them for…
Then I kept seeing these Beautiful Pendants…But unfortunately they were not only Beautiful but Pricey as well…
Photobucket

And since I don’t know how to get those FANCY Silhouettes made I figured why not go the
EASY WAY and use our Initials…
Our daughters saw me making these and immediately wanted necklaces of their own…

Photobucket

And I remembered that I had these Plastic Rings I had been holding on to….
Is that not what all CRAFTY people do….
HOLD ON to things…
Waiting for Inspiration to STRIKE…
Well STRIKE it did…

Photobucket

I used this Paper in Ivory to back my rings
You could use whatever you have on hand
Photobucket
Trace the Outside of your ring, cutting and trimming so that it doesn’t show on the front side…
Photobucket

I used my Vintage Mod Podge…
Okay
It’s not really Vintage…. It Just sounded good
To help keep my Paper in place..

Photobucket

This is what it should look like….
If a bit of Podge eeeks out it’s okay
Just as long as it doesn’t go to much in the center where you will be putting your Initial..
If that is the method you will be using..
Photobucket
These our the Beads that I chose to use for my project…
Again, you can use whatever you have or like
Whats great about these, is that they are all various sizes which makes it easy to fill in the Ring without gaps

Photobucket

Begin placing your beads and using Podge when needed to keep them from moving

Photobucket

This is what you’ll end up with..
If your Ring doesn’t have a Loop…
Just poke a whole using a Pin Needle and Place a Jump ring through…

Photobucket

Then EVER so carefully write your Initial….
I did mine with a Pencil
I wanted the Initials to look a bit faded and not so dark
You could do this before you place your beads… But because every Ring is different and the Beads stick out differently… I wanted to make sure my Initial was centered and not cut off by a bead..

Photobucket

Here’s our daughters Initial done….
Talk about EXCITED….She couldn’t wait to wear it..
Photobucket
OH, YES!!!
Mistakes do happen…

Photobucket
Now for the FUN part….
I used this…
I had actually bought some Expensive stuff that you have to mix and blend…
But I saw this Beauty and knew this was more like it….
One Step… EASY!!!!
That’s what I like…
Photobucket

Be Sure to Follow the instructions on the bottle…
And you Certainly don’t want these in your Baubles…
Air Bubbles…
If you do get them…I would stake a straight pin and slide them out over the side, using the Pin on it’s side like a scraper..

Photobucket

Before I begin putting anything inside my ring
I would make sure all the Air Bubbles are out…

Photobucket

Then begin filling my ring

Photobucket

Being sure to fill it as it will level out and sink in …
Now, mind you I am Photography this with one hand and trying to hole the Tweezers with the other….
ALL
For the sake of Tutorials….
I take the shot and RIGHT after….

Photobucket
This is what happened….
It FELL right out of my hand a Splattered all over..
No, I was not hurt in the Making of this Tutorial….
But thank you for your concern..

Photobucket

After making sure that all the beads were in place I refilled it and began letting it dry…
This was about after and Hour…
You can see it is still a bit cloudy
Photobucket

This was about an hour and half later….
It has been hot here so it is drying quicker than normal

Photobucket
And
that my friends is How I did it….
Photobucket
What I Love about these and doing it myself
Is…

Photobucket

That
my family now has a KEEPSAKE…

Photobucket

And…
They will ALWAYS remember me making these for them as well as…
Knowing that those Initials were not just made and printed out with computers
But were hand written by there
Momma
with
♥ LOVE ♥

Photobucket
I hope you enjoyed this Tutorial…though I know it was EXTREMELY long…
And
If you do try this I would LOVE to see what you come up with…
Happy Memory Making To you!!

Don't worry, Angelina, I don't know how to do a collage either! I try in Picasa and then I lose it and can't find it again. These are great! You are right ~ they will remember that you made these for them and wrote their initials with your own hand. What a great gift!

  3. 3

I can't do collages either! I love it, I have never used dimensional medium…I see my "C" is there! I am going to have to think of something to try the dimensional stuff on! Good Job Missy! If you figure out how to do collages on the Mac let me know!

Fantastic! I was so excited when you started showing how to make them with the plastic rings since I don't have fancy schmancy vintage brass ones. I do keep that vintage Mod Podge around in bulk, though, and now I'll look for the filler podge or whatever it's called.

These are really, really lovely, and I'm so glad you showed how to make them.

Adorable! I can think of all kinds of my junk…I mean supplies…that I have hoarded…I mean collected that can be used to make this. If you leave your podge stuff upside down all of the air bubbles are at the other end. Thanks for the tutorial.

This is lovely, I am just learning all the uses for Mod Podge, back in the 70′s there was pretty much one use (decoupage) and one product! Your beautiful rings made me once again think that when I look at something, I need to think outside the box and see what else it can be used for before casting it away! Thanks

I just love your charms. I Can’t wait to make a bunch for gifts. I just don’t have any idea where to get the rings. Are they curtain rings for cafe curtains?? Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you for inspiring me to be creative. :) )

      Angelina says:

Hello Vivian, Thank you for the Sweet comment… Yes, these are Vintage cafe/curtain rings… I have collected them over time.. You can find rings in the stores and age them for a Vintage look and feel or scour your Antique stores for some Vintage ones… I hope that helps and would LOVE to see your charms when you do make some… :)

  52. 53

These are so pretty and precious. I would love to buy a few–do you make them for sale?

Hello there; I am not sure you will even read this since this post is so old.. BUT your charms are adorable .. Did you know that you can fill them with resin by taping the back with packing tape or duck tape and sealing it then filling the bezel with resin? You just remove the tape when dry and you have a very sturdy charm to protect your beautiful handwriting. Just thought I would share.
    Blessings, Gweny

      Hello Gweny,
Thank you so much for stopping in and for such a handy tip.. I haven’t made any charms since the tutorial so I will have to give your method a try.. :)

    Sarah Beverly says:

These are great! I didn’t read all the comments, so I might be repeating a tip for adding the beads, so forgive any duplication.

To easily add the beads: String them on a tread with a bead needle and approximate how many you will need for your project leaving some tread on each end for tails. Having put down some glue or Mod Podge, lay the string around the piece where you want the beads. Then simply pull the thread gently and the beads are where you want them. Easy Peasy!

  55. 58

I know this is an older tutorial, but new to me. I am really into jewelry making now, and will have to try this (as soon as I can round up some circles). Love the look. I’ll post you a pic of my finished result when completed. Thanks for sharing.

  2. [...] I’ve always loved the letter “A” displayed on things. Am I the only one – or do some of you love your initials? I liked the book The Scarlet Letter because she got to wear an “A” on her chest (just kidding, I love that book, but, um, that letter isn’t because of her name). These charm pendants spotted at Ruby Jean are absolutely beautiful, and if you love your initials (or know someone who does), you need to make a few. The brass rings give it a special touch. I want to make two “A”s and wear. Do you want to make some too? Visit the tutorial here. [...]
